How to Prepare for NAPLAN: A Calm, Practical Guide for Parents

By the teaching team at 10/10 Tutoring, Loganholme · Reviewed for the current Australian Curriculum V9

If your child is in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9, NAPLAN is coming — and the biggest gift you can give them is calm, targeted preparation rather than last-minute cramming. This guide explains what NAPLAN tests, how to prepare at home, how to approach the writing task, and how to keep stress low, drawing on what we see work with Queensland students every year through our NAPLAN tutoring in Loganholme.

What is NAPLAN and who sits it?

NAPLAN — the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy — is an annual assessment sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, usually in Term 1 (around March). It gives a snapshot of literacy and numeracy against national standards. It is one measure among many, not a pass/fail exam, and it is best treated that way.

What NAPLAN actually tests

  • Reading — understanding and interpreting a range of texts.
  • Writing — one narrative or persuasive piece, marked on ideas, structure, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
  • Language conventions — spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Numeracy — number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability.

How to prepare for NAPLAN at home

Reading

Read widely together and talk about it. Ask your child to predict, summarise and explain — comprehension grows through discussion, not just decoding. Ten to fifteen minutes of purposeful reading most days beats an occasional marathon. This is exactly the foundation our primary tutoring for Years 3–6 builds on.

Writing

Practise writing to a prompt within a set time, then review together: is there a clear beginning, middle and end? Are ideas developed? Then check spelling and punctuation. Short, frequent sessions build stamina without pressure.

Language conventions

Revisit spelling patterns, grammar and punctuation little and often. Games and everyday examples work better than worksheets for retention.

Numeracy

Weave maths into daily life — cooking, shopping, time — and shore up any shaky foundations (times tables, place value). Confidence with fundamentals lifts everything above them.

Preparing for the NAPLAN writing task

Writing is often where the fastest gains are available, because structure is teachable. Teach your child to spend a minute planning, write to a clear structure, and leave a moment to check spelling and punctuation. Familiarity with narrative and persuasive forms — and with writing to time — removes much of the fear.

Reducing NAPLAN stress

  • Frame NAPLAN honestly: it’s a snapshot, not a verdict on your child.
  • Protect sleep and routine in the lead-up — wellbeing affects performance more than last-minute study.
  • Do a little familiarisation with the format so the test itself holds no surprises.
  • Model calm. Children take their emotional cues from the adults around them.

When to consider a tutor

If there are specific gaps, or if test-day anxiety is pulling your child down, structured support can help. For Years 7–9, our middle-years tutoring targets the same skills NAPLAN measures. At 10/10 Tutoring in Loganholme, our qualified Queensland teachers start with a diagnostic assessment and build a targeted plan — so preparation strengthens the underlying skills, not just the test.

Frequently asked questions

When is NAPLAN held?

NAPLAN is held annually in Term 1, usually around March, for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Confirm current dates via your school or the official NAP website.

How long before NAPLAN should we start preparing?

A few months of light, consistent preparation is far more effective — and less stressful — than intensive cramming in the final weeks.

Can you really prepare for NAPLAN?

Yes — by strengthening the literacy and numeracy skills it measures and getting familiar with the format. That benefits your child well beyond the test itself.
